I don't mind the phrase 'a piece of artwork', but there's something about artwork being referred to as 'a piece' that makes me cringe - as in 'How much are you asking for this piece?' or 'When was this piece done?'
This, though, is literally a piece. When you see drawings like this, don't assume the artist is a mysterious being who knows something you don't. It may have something to do with drawing in the dark or knocking over a cup of coffee.
Ordinarily, I would have abandoned this drawing, because it doesn't even really look like Katie - at least not as much as I intended. I sought the opinion of Katie's father, who said, 'No, it doesn't really look like Katie. But it sure looks like this other girl I know. That's who I thought it was.'
So here it is, sort of like Based on a True Story. It's not really Katie, but it could be a piece of this other girl Katie's father knows.
